White ants are baby termites that have not grown to full size or assumed their darker color. If you find a few adult soldier termites, they may just be on a search for new home. If you break up a nest and expose a horde of white ants that keep pouring out you have a well-established termite outbreak to deal with, and that is a real worry!

The only effective form of termite protection that stops termite damage in its tracks is deep drilling, followed by injection of a deadly termite poison. The one we use has the stamp of government approval, yet is safe for people and their pets when carefully applied .

 

Bed bugs have become a major problem for pest control. People in Scottsdale are increasingly complaining about rashes, swellings and allergic reactions the blood-sucking creatures cause at night. Hotels have a particular problem when hotel guests leave a few unwanted ‘visitors’ behind. They slip into mattresses, bed bases, and even duvet covers. The best control measures team pesticides with mechanical interventions, such as squashing bed bugs and vacuuming them from their harbourages where they shelter during daytime. They can live without food for up to 300 days, but exposure to temperature greater than 45 °C for more 2 hours kills them dead. Arizona has a number of indigenous bee species of which we find many in Greater Phoenix area . Most of these native ones are relatively harmless and go about their business fertilizing plants and flowers. Bees are important contributors. Nutritionists believe a third of what we eat comes courtesy of these busy insects. Unfortunately, the local bee stock was not productive enough for early settlers. They imported European honeybees and that is where the problem started.

It is easy to identify the invaders from their banded dull yellow and brown abdomens. They are fast becoming more populous as they kill off indigenous bees. They are also bad news for unwitting people especially children who innocently disturb their swarms and may even attempt beehive removal. They leave their stinging barbs behind in our skin where they keep pumping their poison. Receiving multiple stings from an angry swarm can cause people with allergies to stop breathing, collapse, and die.
